Why did you create this collection?
It's a story of time on my hands and a need to be creative really.. Being a portrait photographer and in the absence of any people to photograph during the lockdown this year, I took my macro lens on my daily constitutional walks to places like South Ealing Cemetary and Blondin Park in Ealing, West London and captured some close up macro images of my favourite wild flowers that were out at the time in London..Forget-me-nots, Cow Parsley, Wisteria (maybe not so wild but one of my favourite plants ever) and Bellflowers.
I had been searching for some extra large scarves like the ones from Louis Vuitton for a while having been inspired by Trinny Woodall who wears them all the time and to great effect, they really do take your outfit to a whole new level and help to blend top and bottom as well as hiding any tummy you may have, but they are just so expensive and large ones in colours that I love just don't crop up second hand very often...so I thought maybe I could produce one from my own images.. In my excitement I shared my creation on facebook and had such a great response I wondered if this might be a great add on to my photography business.
I work with colour every day, making sure my clients are wearing the right colours for the right backdrops, I do outside shoots a lot with families and understanding how colours work together has really elevated my work to a new level. In the studio I use amazing chiffons and satin materials to enhance the colour of my pregnant clients skin and contrast the background. I also know that my clients are all hugely stylish and well dressed women who may be interested in some elegant scarves as well as the wonderful Trinny Tribe that I've become a part of. So it seemed like the perfect synergy for me. Thankfully my husband has been wonderfully supportive and encouraging me all the way, making me believe I could do this.
For a Behind The Scenes view on how the scarves came to be, read my blog on the work that went into it all...
What is the material?
I am using a Gorgeous Crepe De Chine 100% pure Silk 67gsm for the best draping material. It really does feel gorgeous, I can't wait for you to see them.
How big are the scarves?
They come in 3 sizes:
Extra Large Scarf - A whopping 135cm x 180cm
Large Square Scarf - 180x65cm
Headscarf - 65x65cm
I prefer the larger size as it can create that wonderful indulgent drape around your neck, or can be worn as a dress with clever knotting!
What if you run out of stock?
So as I am a small business I am not going to keep thousands of scarf in stock, mainly because our house is already full to the brim with photography equipment.. So if an item is out of stock please just sign up to the waitlist and I will let you know when the next batch arrives. This will also allow me to adjust the numbers of each design as I get a feel for which ones are selling more. If you're buying for a friend and I've run out of the scarf you want to buy, you could get a gift card to give her instead..
How does colour theory come into it?
As a photographer I have studied colour theory and use it in my work all the time. It's basically a way of putting colours together that work well and don't compete with each other for attention. Sometimes we see colours in a design and just love it but we are not sure why... it's likely due to the fact that the designer thought about the colour wheel when designing it!!
So in designing these scarves I thought firstly about what colours we all like to wear, and our own skin tones.. I then created colour mixes that would compliment those colours and enhance our skin to really make us glow. Take a look at my 'what to wear on a photo shoot' blog which will give you an idea of colour wheel theory.
I wanted one for myself in a soft blue and brown colour palette (a fantastic colour combo I use all the time), but I also love pink and grey..so I've created a first run of bespoke designs from which to choose from. What Trinny does so well is putting colours together, using the colour wheel, but also her gut feeling. I have used the colours I know will work well with skin tones but also with our favourite summer colours too.
How long will it take to come?
Usually allow a week for delivery
Can I return it if I don't like it?
Yes of course, that's fine. I want you to love your scarf so if you're in any way unhappy I will certainly refund you
What are the care instructions?
These are 100% pure silk so hand wash in cold water with mild detergent, soak up to 5-10 minutes. Gently squeeze water until it runs clear, do not wring or twist. Lay flat onto clean towel and roll up to rid of excess moisture, then leave to air dry natural.
Or dry clean
What's with the tree planting?
So I think we all realise the impact we're all having on our beautiful world, I wanted to have a percentage of the profits of these scarves go to a charity and what better way than to plant a tree for every scarf ordered. So I'll split my tree planting offering between UK and third world using the Tree Council and One Tree Planted
What are your Eco credentials?
Apart from planting a tree for every scarf sold, my gorgeous tailor Larysa will be donating 50p per scarf to the Ealing Wildlife Trust.
My packaging is all biodegradeable with corn postage bags and cardboard boxes.
The Scarves were printed in Evesham so the carbon footprints is pretty good as that's only 80 miles away.
Doing what I can, one small step at a time
The work behind the silk..
I felt strongly that I wanted the scarves to be British made of British flowers, if you search the internet, most of the silk scarves are proudly Italian...well I'm here to tell you that British is best!!! I used a wonderful company called The Silk Bureau based in Evesham just south of Birmingham, and despite my ignorance of the fashion world they've managed to steer me through the process and produced the most amazing silk ..I'm thrilled..
I then wanted to find a local tailor to help hem the scarves and make up some facemasks to a very high standard. These are exquisite silk scarves and need to be finished off perfectly, so I tried 5 different tailors locally and found Larysa of Cushions&Creations and she is brilliant at what she does, she made it look so easy...wow. She also understands the need to give back and my wanting to plant a tree for every scarf, we're the perfect match. She also makes stunning facemasks, so I'm really excited to be working with her.
